Fernand LEGER (1881-1955) Costume design for the ballet La Création du Monde, [1923] Ink and watercolor on paper Monogrammed and titled lower right 21.5, x 14 cm PROVENANCE : Collection Nadia Léger, Paris (wife of the artist), Private collection, Paris NOTE : Blaise Cendrars for the arguments taken from his Anthologie Nègre published in 1921, Marius Milhaud for the music and Fernand Léger for the sets, were commissioned to write a piece for Rolf de Maré's Ballets Suédois: La Création du Monde, which premiered at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées on October 25, 1923, its 100th anniversary. The ballet revolves around three eight-metre-high African gods, who participate in the birth of man, plants and animals. animals, including this fantastic bird, imagined by Fernand Léger through our preparatory watercolor. Fernand Léger's inspiration is vast: the shapes and colors of the costumes designed by Fortunato Depero for Le Chant du Rossignol, Larionov's drawings for Diaghilev's ballet Histoires Naturelles, the birds of North America and Amerindian art. As Madeleine Milhaud wrote in Mon XXe siècle about Fernand Léger's sets for La Création du Monde: "I have never seen sets as sumptuous as those by Fernand Léger".
