PPP592 (Petit Palais collection) NOTE : Fernand PELEZ (1843-1913) trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was a pupil of Alexandre Cabanel. Fernand Pelez's work is distinguished by a particular focus on the working classes, the marginalized and those excluded from society. His most famous painting, Grimaces et Misères - Les Saltimbanques (1888), (Petit Palais collection), a monumental fresco over 20 meters long, depicts miserable street performers, revealing the distress behind the mask of entertainment. Fernand Pelez is recognized today as a precursor of social realism in painting.
