Hexagonal boxwood box, carved, with gilded and reperced deco - Lot 223
Hexagonal boxwood box, carved, with gilded and reperced decoration of quatrefoils and ovals forming floral motifs; shell-shaped lid, molded base with flattened ball feet. The interior is lined with a panel of the same design and a mirror. Flanders, late 16th century H. 17, W. 10.2, D. 9 cm NOTE : The decoration on this curious box is similar to that on the so-called liturgical boxwood combs, which feature the same geometric pattern of ovals and quatrefoils. Some also have an identical mirror assembly, which is preserved inside the box shown here. The use of this small box is not clear. Is it a box for an insect, a small lantern, or simply a small decorative box? A small corpus of similarly decorated objects, most certainly made in Flanders, exists: these include boxes with rounded lids, as well as similar-shaped boxes that have come up for sale in recent years.
