Marie Joseph Léon CLAVEL dit IWILL (1850-1923) From the Lido to Venice, 1909 Oil on canvas, signed lower left, located and dated 1909, annotated on the stretcher "du Lido à Venise". 105 x 136 cm EXHIBITION : Paris, Société nationale des Beaux-Art, Salon de 1910, n°688, ( p.17 of the catalog) "Pastelist or painter, Iwill loves the mirror of the waters, the coming grain, the wet wind of the winter months [...]. His pastel tones have retained the changing mother-of-pearl, the pearl-gray of backgrounds with a greenish or pinkish glow", wrote Raymond Bouyer. Early in his career, Iwill took this pseudonym, inspired by the English "I will", to mark his determination to become a painter, despite the advice of his father. He made a name for himself among French landscape painters, exhibiting regularly at the Salons as well as in the United States; in 1910, the Detroit Museum of Art gave him a one-man show
