ITALIAN school circa 1700, after Antiquity - Lot 286
ITALIAN school circa 1700, after Antiquity Borghese Gladiator Bronze with brown patina H. 53.7 cm, one of the bases in portor marble H. 7 cm Reversed patina RELATED WORK : Guerrier combattant dit Gladiateur Borghèse, signed by Agasias of Ephesus, son of Dositheos, circa 100 BC, Anzio (Antium), province of Lazio, Italy, H.: 1.99 m, Paris, Musée du Louvre, inv. MR 224. RELATED LITERATURE : HASKELL Francis, Pour l'amour de l'antique - la statuaire gréco-romaine et le goût européen, 1500-1900, Paris, Hachette, 1988, pp.240-244 NOTE: Although the marble statue of the Borghese Gladiator was probably discovered in Nettuno in 1611, it is mentioned with certainty for the first time in the Borghese collection. In 1650, it was found in a room bearing its name in the Villa Borghese. Purchased in 1807 by Napoleon I, it arrived in Paris in 1808, where it was exhibited in the Salle d'Apollon at the Musée de Napoléon. Our bronze reduction has a curious, thickly varnished patina, which seems to mask the beautiful golden-brown color of the original patina.
