Flat desk with rosewood veneer and Coromandel lacquer panels - Lot 270
Flat desk with rosewood veneer and Coromandel lacquer panels. Curved in shape, it features three drawers with keys in the waistband, the top covered in black leather with gilded vignettes, edged with a molded bronze moulding. The side panels are decorated with animated scenes of pagodas and Chinese gardens. The central drawer is decorated with flowers on a black background (visible wear to the lacquer and top). It stands on four slightly arched legs. Chased and gilded bronze staples, falls, slippers and keyways decorated with rocaille, flowers, foliage and scrolls. Louis XV style. Germany or Flanders. Late 18th-early 19th century H.79 cm, W.155 cm, D.82 cm. Note: Lacquerware arrived in Europe via the ships of the Compagnie des Indes and missionaries, and enjoyed great success in the 17th and 18th centuries. Transported in the form of large panels or screens, it was not uncommon for some of them to be repurposed by cabinetmakers on furniture. Collected in all the courts of Europe, these precious pieces of furniture remain rare and sought-after to this day. Coromandel lacquer continued to be used in the 20th century, notably for the Art Deco period.
