Leonard Tsuguharu FOUJITA (1886-1968) - Lot 244
Leonard Tsuguharu FOUJITA (1886-1968) Portrait of Vaslav Fomitch Nijinsky, 1928 Graphite and charcoal on tracing paper mounted on cardboard Signed lower right 23.2 x 24.8 cm NOTE: Upon meeting Nijinsky, Foujita was very interested in the figure and the plasticity of his face, which he drew, highlighted by a muscular neck. Of this portrait, only three inks are known to exist, one of them gravure. As our work is the first and only known version of Foujita's pencil and stump portrait of the famous Ballets Russes dancer, it is a preparatory study for a painting that is still unknown and perhaps never executed. The work will be listed and published in volume no. 5 of the painter's Catalogue raisonné currently being prepared by Sylvie and Casimir BUISSON. A certificate of authenticity from Madame Sylvie BUISSON will be given to the buyer.
