Note: The motif of the mouth or kiss is quite frequent in Man Ray's work: it is found in other photographs, but also in drawings, paintings, prints and objects (Les Amoureux, Images à deux faces). All these works were inspired by the lips of Lee Miller, the artist's muse and object of desire, who is photographed here in profile with an unidentified woman. Man Ray's work of reframing, so essential to obtaining the final work, was here carried out by folding. The theme of the mouth or the kiss is quite frequent in Man Ray's work: it is found in other photographs, but also in drawings, paintings, prints and objects (Les Amoureux, Images à deux faces). All these works were inspired by the lips of Lee Miller, the artist's muse and object of desire, who is photographed here in profile with an unidentified woman. Man Ray's reframing technique, so essential to obtaining the final work, was achieved here by folding.
