MAN RAY (1890-1976)
Marquise Casati, 1922 Original gelatin-silver print, annotated in pencil on the back "enlargement + retouch" 10.5 x 5.7 cm Marquise Casati, 1922 Original gelatin-silver print, annotated in pencil on the back "enlargement + retouch" 4.14 x 2.25 inch Note : Luisa Amman, marquise Casati (1881-1957), was a great success in the world of fashion and extravagance. A friend of Gabriele d'Annunzio and Robert de Montesquiou, she divided her time between Paris, Venice, London and Capri. Close to the Italian Futurists, some of whose works she owned and inspired, she was the model for many painters, first and foremost Romaine Brooks, but also van Dongen (Musée d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris), Boldini, Balla, Bakst, Zuloaga and Cocteau. This photograph highlights her emaciated features that are eaten by huge eyes strongly underlined with black, and her impressive red hair, reminiscent of the symbolist heroines that Man Ray was unable to render through photography.
