Note:
In the winter of 1938, the International Exhibition of Surrealism was held at the Galerie des Beaux-arts in Paris. In the corridor, transformed into a "surrealist street", sixteen mannequins dressed by the artists were installed against the wall. These mannequins are surrealist objects halfway between the animate and the inanimate. Man Ray caps his with light bulbs while the body is left naked except for the hips, surrounded by a ribbon bearing the inscription "goodbye scarf". Glass beads at the corners of the eyes and in the armpits are reminiscent of Tears (lot 128): "I left my mannequin naked, with glass tears on its face and glass soap bubbles in its hair."
