Oscar DOMINGUEZ ( 1906 - 1957 )
Americana - (circa 1943) Oil on canvas Signed Yves TANGUY and dated 39 lower right. Titled and dated 939 (1939) on the back. 70 x 50 cm A certificate of authenticity established by the DOMINGUEZ committee and the Association of Experts and Heirs for the defense of the work of Oscar DOMINGUEZ dated May 4, 2022 will be given to the buyer. Provenance: - Private collection - Paris Note : This work of Oscar DOMINGUEZ is signed Yves TANGUY and dated 39 (1939) in the lower right corner. This practice, which can be considered as surrealist, which consists in affixing a signature that does not correspond to that of the author of the work, was quite common for Oscar DOMINGUEZ. But also for other artists of this particular period who did not hesitate to exchange their signatures (see preface page 45) The specialists of surrealism consider these "appropriations" of signatures as a kind of "collective game" adopted as well by the artist who carries the name of the signature, as by the one who executed the work. Another more pragmatic interpretation is that this practice allowed the author of the work to sell more under another name, especially in difficult economic and political circumstances. Isidro Hernandez GUTIERREZ tells us in his preface (see page 45), that the funds collected as a result of these "appropriations" were also used to finance the Resistance during the Second World War. Reason for which the DOMINGUEZ Committee which delivered the certificate of authenticity emits the hypothesis that this work could have been made around 1943, whereas the style of this painting corresponds to a work of 1939. Thanks to : Isidro Hernandez GUTIERREZ, Curator of the Oscar DOMINGUEZ Collection in Tenerife, for his comparative studies of the iconographic elements that led to the authentication of this work.
