Gustave MIKLOS (1888-1967) - Lot 165
Gustave MIKLOS (1888-1967) Abstract composition-1920. Mixed media, lacquer and collage on paper pasted on cardboard and medium. Very small accidents. Signed, dated lower left. Marked on the back: "n°1 Expo. 1920 at the Salon d'Automne. G. Miklos. 158 rue Saint-Jacques Paris" 105 x 75 cm Notice written by the Miklos Committee: If a handwritten note on the back indicates "Expo. 1920 à Salon d'Automne", this work executed by Gustave Miklos does not appear in the pages of the catalogue of the 13th Salon d'Automne exhibition (Grand Palais, 15 October-12 December 1920). The reasons for its absence from the picture rails remain mysterious. His paintings from the years 1919-1921 are still very poorly known and too rare to allow a comparative study with the present work. Miklos had exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1919 two paintings entitled The Dancer X (first bar) and The Dancer X (fourth bar), which have not been identified to this day At the 1920 Salon des Indépendants (28 January-29 February), he sent four paintings: Young Girl in Green on a Pink Pig, Colin-Maillard, Young Girl with a Yellow Background and Woman in Blue. It is reasonable to assume that all these subjects - which remain unknown - may have been treated in a Cubist style. Indeed, an oil on canvas entitled Vitesse contraste de forme, which was sold on 15 April 1992 at the Hôtel Drouot-Paris, and a painting of a figure dated 1921 (reproduced in Pierre's Encyclopédie Art Déco, Cabane, published by Somogy, 1986) lay the foundations for his research into Cubist forms in the years following the First World War. The work presented here, dated 1920 and located in his studio at 158 rue Saint-Jacques in Paris, shows his interest in this artistic movement whose codes he had adopted at the end of 1912. This work will be reproduced in the catalogue raisonné being prepared by the Gustave Miklos Committee. We thank the Miklos Committee for confirming the authentication of this painting.
