Michel François DANDRE BARDON (Aix en Provence 1700 - Paris 1783)
To bit burying the dead Canvas 85 x 110 cm Provenance : - Acquired in 1971 in Saumur by the present owner. Note : This rarely treated biblical subject evokes the story of Tobit, father of Tobie, exiled to Nineveh in Mesopotamia with his people. During the persecutions of the king Sennacherib, Tobit secretly buried the victims of his clan (Book of Tobit, I). This composition was probably painted by the artist between 1734 and 1745, a decade in which he launched his career as a history painter in Paris thanks to the protection of his fellow Aix-en-Provence native Charles Gaspard Guillaume de Vintimille du Luc (1655 - 1746), Archbishop of Paris. The painter then subscribed to the public's taste for subjects of macabre tragedy and his works were part of the movement to represent funerary episodes in Christian history. Dandré-Bardon never ceased to reflect on and compose after this subject from the Book of Tobit. During the 1720s, he had already produced a gouache sheet (Paris, Louvre Museum) and two paintings (no longer extant) belonging respectively to the Aix amateur Jean-Baptiste Boyer de Fonscolombe and to his uncle the Commander Bardon of Malta. Another version of our painting, of smaller dimensions, has recently appeared in the Lyon trade (55.8 x 66.6 cm).
