Philippe SAUVAN (Arles 1697 - Avignon 1792) Jesus... - Lot 19 - Christophe Joron Derem
Philippe SAUVAN (Arles 1697 - Avignon 1792) Jesus as the Saviour of the World and an Angel Black stone, red chalk, pen and brown ink, white highlights 21.4 x 16.5 cm Note: Philippe Sauvan began his apprenticeship with his father, the gilding painter Honoré Sauvan, before studying from 1714 onwards in Pierre Parrocel's workshop in Avignon. He worked in Rome for a few months before returning to Avignon, where he became the most sought-after painter. For the rest of his career he worked for almost every aristocratic family in the region, including the Marquis de Calvière at the château de Vézenobres, as well as many local churches. His drawing style resembles that of the Roman draughtsmen of the 1720s, such as Passeri. Similar drawings by Sauvan were part of the Petit-Hory donation in Bayonne, and of the Horvitz collection. The Calvet Museum and the Avignon Municipal Library also hold some (see the catalogue of the exhibition La Souveraineté, Philippe Sauvan, Avignon, Musée Calvet, 2002).
