Exhibition: - Drawings from the Christian and Isabelle Adrien collection, Rennes, Musée des Beaux - Arts, 2012, n° 6, reproduced, (notice Ketty Gottardo). Note: Our drawing is probably preparatory for the painting Saint More and Saint Roch adoring the Virgin and Child, kept in the Civic Museum of Bassano del Grappa. It is a late work in the artist's career. A plaque in the chapel of the Palazzo Pretorio, where the painting was first exhibited, mentions the date 1576. The work was commissioned at that time by the podesta of Venice Moro, in gratitude for having been saved during the plague epidemic that was then raging in Venice. Two other drawings by Bassano for the same painting, also from the Sagredo album, belonged to the Adrien collection. Roger Rearick thinks he recognises in one of them, as well as in the painting, a collaboration of Jacopo's son, Leandro, due in particular to the very rare use of sanguine. After Jacopo's death and that of his heirs, it seems that most of the drawings, if not all, became the property of the Sagredo family. At the time of the sale of the Sagredo album to the collector John Udny in 1762, two hundred and one drawings are mentioned. The mark B B for Bottega Bassanesca was affixed by Zaccaria Sagredo to the works from the Bassano workshop. The mounting is also characteristic of the other sheets in the album.
