KINGDOM OF EGYPT: PTolemy II Philadelphus (283-246 B.C.) Gold pentadrachm. 17.91 g. Alexandria. Head of Ptolemy I Soter on the right, the aegis tied around his neck. R/ Eagle standing on a thunderbolt on the left. In the left field, monogram and shield; I between the eagle's legs. Svoronos 573, pl. XIII, 3 (2 specimens). Superb copy of this rare coin. He was director of the French Institute in Cairo from 1912 to 1914, then director of the Directorate of Egyptian Antiquities from 1914 to 1936 and professor at the Collège de France (chair of Egyptology) from 1936 to 1938. In 1939, he became a member of the Académie des Arts et des Lettres.
