Note: In 1853, Jean - Baptiste Carpeaux presented his bas-relief L'empereur reçoit Abd el Kader au palais de Saint Cloud at the Salon, now in the Musée des Beaux - Arts de Valenciennes. Noticed by Napoleon III, he quickly became a family member of the Court and began a brilliant official career, notably as a portraitist. Throughout the Second Empire, he created numerous sculptures of the Emperor, Eugenie and the Imperial Prince, as well as prominent figures such as Princess Mathilde. Appointed professor to the Imperial Prince, Carpeaux was also a chronicler of the Second Empire. He made many small sketches on the spot, real testimonies of court life and official and historical events in the 1860s.
