Valenciennes 1796 14.5 x 18.5 cm Note: Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes studied painting at the Royal Academy of Toulouse from 1770 to 1771, then in the studio of Gabriel-François Doyen. He travelled to Italy for the first time in 1769, settled in Rome from 1777 to 1781, travelled to the Near East in 1782-1784 and finally returned, with many sketchbooks, to settle in Paris where he spent most of his career. Our paintings date from his return to Paris, inspired by his stay in Italy.
