Note: Our drawing is a youthful work by Granet, drawn during a stay in Lyon around 1800. Marius Granet is said to have stayed twice in Lyon. The first time, for a few days in 1799, on his way to Provence, with his friend Forbin. He was then exhibiting at the Salon for the first time. He was informed in particular by the Gazette of the excellent reception given to his painting "Le cloître des Capucins", he decided to turn back and return to Paris. According to testimonies, notably that of the painter Grobon, and especially some landscapes preserved in the Granet Museum in Aix en Provence (see D. Coutagne, François - Marius Granet 1775 - 1849, une vie pour la peinture, Paris, 2008, n°s 36 and 37, reproduced), Granet then stayed in Lyon between 1800 and 1802. We know that he also established friendly ties with the artistic milieu of Lyon in David's studio, notably with the painters Revoil and Fleury Richard, and the curator of the Lyon museum, Artaud. Revoil is said to have considered hiring Granet as a teacher at the future Lyon School of Drawing. These links that Granet will keep throughout his life will influence his painting, orienting it towards a troubadour or gothic vein that we find in our drawing. Freeing himself from David and the neo-classical current, Granet embarks on the path of a more intimate painting, which owes much to the painters of the northern schools that he likes.
