First French edition, translated by Jean Le Carpentier and published at the same time as the original Dutch edition. Both editions have the same illustration. The second part, under separate pagination, is entitled General Description of the Empire of China. Johan Nieuhoff, born in 1630, disappeared in Madagascar in 1672, had left Germany to join the Dutch East India Company. He became the columnist and draftsman of the first Dutch embassy in China. Small marginal wetting affecting the last third of the book, light wetness in the portrait, a few leaves with a slightly loose broaching; very slight freckles. tailpiece, Sinica, III, col. 2345.
