RELATED WORKS : Artist's catalog (site alixayme.com) : N° HT 22, HT 23, HT 30 NOTE: In the prolific career of Alix Aymé, who excelled in a wide variety of techniques, this painting belongs to a series of nudes painted in Hanoi from 1935 to 1940. This series marks the end of her major works in oil on canvas. As early as 1935, she initiated research into the lacquer technique at the Hanoi School of Fine Arts, where she taught. From the 40s onwards, lacquer became her preferred medium of expression. A dozen nudes from this period are known. A rare motif in the context of Vietnamese artists of the time, who emphasized restraint, modesty and traditional female attitudes. In this series, Alix Aymé paints her model, always the same, a ravishing young Vietnamese woman who was also the "nanny" of her young son François. All the paintings in this series are done in the living room of the artist's home. The languid young woman appears to be asleep, reclining naked on the comfortable sofa covered in warmly colored fabrics. Beautiful light streams in from the garden through the large, half-closed window and its fine curtains. The interior is intimate, the tropical heat barely attenuated by a breath of outside air. In the large blue vase, present on several canvases, white lilies, lotuses and gladioli symbolize the innocence of this young woman in the intimacy of a well-kept interior. A connection can be made with Suzanne Valadon's paintings of the same period, Female Nudes in an Interior. With this series, Alix Aymé shows the freedom of her character, the strength of a courageous woman who had to fight alone in a man's world. She also emphasizes the simple beauty of women, paying homage to the harmony and elegance that, in Asia, seduced her eye and generated so many works. In this beautiful painting of a European interior, the typically Asian model appears in all her naked purity. I see in it the fusion of two worlds, two cultures, which illustrates the personality of Alix Aymé who, having arrived in Asia in 1920 with a French academic training, gradually integrated Asian culture and artistic techniques in a creative syncretism that makes her an exceptional artist.
