J.L & A. BEGUELIN - Lot 223
J.L & A. BEGUELIN Large double-sided silver world clock with Greenwich patent. Case: silver, partially gilded with red gold, engraved, glazed on both sides. Numerals: Polychrome front dial with Roman/Arabic 24-hour indication, Arabic minutes, inner five-minute division, rotating central disc with city names, polychrome rear dial with city names, rotating central minute disc. Movement: bridge movement, screw-compression balance. In the 19th century, the world was moving closer together, and rail and sea transport were taking off. It's hard to imagine a single country like Germany not having a single time. Moritz Grossmann, the Glashütte watchmaker already famous at the time, also advocated the introduction of universal time with globally regulated time zones and a 24-hour division, as proposed by Sandford Fleming. When the system was finally introduced in this way, a multitude of "world time" watches saw the light of day, reflecting the enormous interest they aroused. The present large and heavy pocket watch is a particularly representative example, with its two intact colored dials showing both day and night, as well as the local time of no less than 43 cities around the world. This rare, high-quality pocket watch was manufactured by the company J.L. & A. Breguelin in Tramelan for Henry Harburg & Co. London and La Chaux-de-Fonds. Circa 1890 Diameter approx. 62 mm
