Paulding who had inherited it in 1841; this version is set around 1833 when Asher B. Durand traveled to Montpellier, James Madison's residence in Virginia, to paint a live portrait of him, commissioned by George P. Morris, owner of the New-York Mirror, to be engraved for publication in his 1834 newspaper. The resulting work aroused the immediate enthusiasm of President Madison, his entourage and its owner, as recounted in the May 17, 1834 article on the 1834 National Academy of Design exhibition in the New York Mirror. - Similar version in the collection of the Century Association, acquired in 1870 from Asher B. Durand, one of its founding members. Durand, one of its founding members. The work is on permanent display in the dining room of this New York institution. NOTE: Asher Brown Durand made his name with his engraving of John Trumbull's Declaration of Independence, a technical tour de force that established his reputation as one of the finest printmakers of his generation. After 1835, Durand devoted himself mainly to portraiture, executing the effigies of several U.S. presidents as well as other politically or socially influential figures. From 1840 onwards, he travelled to Europe to study the great masters of painting, and on his return to America, devoted himself mainly to landscapes. Born in King George County, Virginia, James Madison was an American statesman and fourth President of the United States between 1809 and 1817. He is one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Both a member of the Republican-Democratic Party and Virginia's delegate to the Continental Congress, he is also considered one of the principal authors of the U.S. Constitution. James Madison oversaw the balance between legislative, judicial and executive powers, as well as the Bill of Rights. He succeeded Thomas Jefferson as U.S. Secretary of State in 1801, before being elected President seven years later. He was also proclaimed a French citizen by the National Legislative Assembly in 1792. We can assume that our painting, the third known version of Madison's portrait by Asher B. Durand, found its way to France through the intermediary of his Parisian dealer, who was responsible for distributing his work in Europe. The painter himself spent a long time in Paris.
