École FRANÇAISE du début du XVIIIe siècle, suiveur de Charles LEBRUN
Saint John the Evangelist Copper 24.5 x 18.5 cm Note: Probably a Flemish artist working in France took over from Lebrun's painting in the Grand Trianon. For this painting, commissioned by the Duke of Richelieu and acquired by Louis XIV around 1662-1663, we know a sketch (Montpellier, Musée Fabre) and a drawing kept in the Louvre. The composition was engraved by Edlinck. In our painting, the artist has changed the color of the tunic of the saint to a beautiful red habit, making this work original.
